Many portrait guides insist that the left side of the face is more attractive. Others recommend turning right, raising the camera, or avoiding a frontal view. Research supports some posing effects, but not one universal side or angle that makes every person look better.
Short Answer: Your Best Side Must Be Tested
There is no scientifically established best side for every face. Some studies found a preference for the left cheek, while other experiments found a right-cheek advantage, no stable side advantage, or effects that changed with expression and participant gender.
The useful conclusion is practical: test both sides under controlled conditions. Keep camera distance, height, lighting, crop, and expression stable so you are actually comparing head orientation rather than five variables at once.
Four Variables Commonly Confused as One Angle
- Head rotation: whether you face the camera or turn toward a three-quarter view.
- Cheek shown: whether the left or right side is more visible.
- Camera elevation: whether the lens is below, at, or above eye level.
- Camera distance: how close the lens position is to the face.
Changing all four can transform a picture, but it prevents a clean explanation. Distance is particularly important because it alters perspective. Where the Left-Side Claim Comes From
Blackburn and Schirillo presented natural portraits showing different cheek orientations. Participants rated left-cheek portraits as more aesthetically pleasing in their experiment, and pupil responses were consistent with greater interest. The researchers connected the pattern to emotional expression.
A broader review by Annukka Lindell described a historical and experimental left-cheek posing bias. Because the right cerebral hemisphere plays an important role in emotional expression and perception, the left side of the face may sometimes communicate emotion more strongly.
That mechanism is plausible, but it does not mean the left side has better bone structure or must win every portrait. Expressiveness and structural attractiveness are not identical judgments. Lighting direction, asymmetry, hair, gaze, and the purpose of the image can outweigh a group-level cheek bias.
Selfie Research Did Not Find One Perfect Side
Schneider and Carbon created controlled virtual selfies varying horizontal rotation, vertical camera angle, and viewing side. In Study 1, both lateral views were rated above the frontal view, with the 15° left hemiface rated higher than the corresponding right view. In Study 2, elevating and rotating the camera either left or right increased attractiveness ratings relative to the frontal view, but direct comparisons between corresponding left and right conditions were not significant. The results therefore do not establish a universal best side.
The authors explicitly cautioned against a universal perfect-selfie rule. Effects also differed by the gender of the depicted face. The experiment used standardized 3D-generated faces, which provides control but does not capture every detail of real skin, hair, expression, and asymmetry.
Front View vs. Three-Quarter View
Main and colleagues found that preferences for front-facing and three-quarter views interacted with expression and the attractiveness of the photographed face. Front views were preferred for happy and relatively attractive faces under some conditions, but the pattern was not a simple overall victory for one orientation.
A three-quarter angle reveals contour and depth, can separate the nose from the cheek, and changes how much of each jaw side is visible. A front view makes bilateral proportions easier to compare. Neither representation is the complete truth of a three-dimensional person.
Camera Height Can Change Social Impressions
In a study of 12 actors filmed in a Split-or-Steal scenario, Baranowski and Hecht found that eye-level clips received the highest trust ratings, while camera elevation did not affect attractiveness. Because these were moving social-interaction clips rather than neutral still portraits, the result does not establish a universal camera-height rule for selfies.
A low camera can make the viewer feel as though they are looking up at the subject, while a high camera creates the opposite relationship. Those compositional signals may affect dominance, warmth, or trust without necessarily changing attractiveness. Eye level remains a practical standardization baseline when comparing photos because it is easy to reproduce, not because the study proved it is always most flattering.
How Much Can Angle Change the Judgment?
Třebický and colleagues photographed male athletes in standardized frontal, profile, and 360-degree conditions. Attractiveness ratings from different views were strongly correlated, and mean differences between angles were not significant. In other words, angle did not erase the stable information observers were using.
This is an important counterweight to online posing claims. A better angle can improve communication and reduce an unflattering overlap or shadow, but it does not reliably turn one face into a different face. The strongest gains often come from fixing distance, lighting, focus, and expression before optimizing a few degrees of rotation.
A Five-Frame Best-Side Protocol
- Set the camera first. Use a tripod or stable surface at eye level, roughly 1.2 to 1.8 meters away, with a normal or modest telephoto field of view.
- Use broad frontal light. Do not put a window on only one side while comparing cheeks, because the light would become the real treatment.
- Capture a front baseline. Keep the head level, shoulders relaxed, and expression natural.
- Turn modestly left and right. Rotate approximately 15 to 30 degrees rather than hiding half the face.
- Add two contextual frames. Repeat the preferred turns with a subtle natural smile.
- Match crop and processing. Disable beauty filters and use the same exposure, white balance, and crop.
- Judge at final size. A detail visible on a large monitor may disappear in a small profile circle.
Name the files before reviewing them so you do not unconsciously change criteria. First compare technical quality, then approachability or professionalism, and finally aesthetic preference. If possible, ask several people from the intended audience rather than relying on one vote.

A vision model evaluates the submitted pixels. Turning the head changes visible contour, feature overlap, illumination, and landmark confidence. A different score is a model-dependent estimate of represented ratings for that image, not evidence that one side is objectively more beautiful.
If a tiny angle change produces a large result, repeat the test with several frames. The difference may reflect focus, exposure, expression, or detection stability rather than a robust preference.
Methodological Limits
Angle studies often use small face sets, Western samples, generated faces, or only male stimuli. Different experiments also ask about attractiveness, beauty of the photograph, trustworthiness, or emotion, which are not equivalent outcomes.
