Your face communicates even when you are silent. Research supports an important role for facial expressions and body language, but there is no universal percentage for their contribution to every interaction.
The 7-38-55 Rule
Albert Mehrabian's (1971) communication research suggested that when a message is about feelings or attitudes:
- 7% of impact comes from words
- 38% comes from tone of voice
- 55% comes from facial expressions and body language
These percentages apply narrowly to messages about feelings and attitudes when verbal and nonverbal cues conflict. They should not be generalized to all communication. Broader research still supports nonverbal behavior as one important part of interpersonal perception.
Facial Expressions and Professional Outcomes
Ambady and Rosenthal (1993) found that judgments from brief silent clips of college teachers predicted students' end-of-semester teacher evaluations. The criterion was an evaluation rating, not an objective measure of learning, and the association does not show that changing one expression will cause better teaching or career outcomes.
Carney, Colvin, and Hall (2007) studied 5- to 300-second slices from five-minute get-acquainted conversations between college students. Accuracy depended on the trait, slice length, and location: negative affect, extraversion, conscientiousness, and intelligence were judged moderately well after brief exposure, while other traits required more information. The study did not test job interviews, sales performance, negotiation results, or leadership evaluations.
Key Facial Expressions for Success
The Duchenne Smile
Named after French neurologist Guillaume Duchenne, this genuine smile engages both the mouth muscles (zygomatic major) and the muscles around the eyes (orbicularis oculi). In retrospective, correlational studies, Hertenstein et al. (2009) found that smile intensity in old photographs was associated with later divorce outcomes. A photograph does not determine relationship success.
Eye Contact
Kleinke's (1986) research review concluded that gaze can affect attraction, communication, and social judgments, with effects depending on the people, task, culture, and interaction. It did not establish a universal 60–70% optimum for trustworthiness or competence.
Resting Face
Observers may read emotion into a neutral expression, but a single resting image is highly sensitive to lighting, head angle, timing, and the observer's expectations. The evidence cited here does not support diagnosing personality or intent from a neutral face.
The Face-Body Connection
Facial expression, gaze, voice, posture, words, and context are interpreted together. That integration is a reason to avoid universal prescriptions based on one gesture: the same behavior can carry different meanings across people and situations.
Optimizing Your Nonverbal Presence
- Compare controlled recordings: Keep camera, lighting, prompt, and duration consistent; AI face analysis is photo feedback, not a measure of social skill
- Aim for congruence: Let expression and tone fit the message instead of forcing a constant smile
- Review a real task: Video can reveal pacing, audibility, interruptions, and gaze direction
- Adapt eye contact: Use responsive, culturally appropriate gaze rather than a fixed percentage
- Ask for contextual feedback: A trusted observer can evaluate whether the full message was clear
