Makeup can change how a face is perceived in a photograph, but the honest scientific answer is more useful than a dramatic before-and-after claim. In controlled studies, cosmetics often increase average attractiveness ratings. The size and meaning of that change depend on the person, application, viewing time, cultural context, and outcome being measured.
Short Answer: Usually on Average, Not Universally
Makeup often raises average attractiveness ratings for female faces in the populations studied. It can also alter impressions of competence, femininity, age, dominance, trust, and skin quality. Those effects do not always move together, and a stronger application is not automatically a better one.
The research base is also narrower than the headline suggests. Most experiments use women or female-presenting faces, restricted cosmetic styles, and static photographs. It should not be generalized to every gender, culture, age, or social setting.
How Controlled Makeup Studies Work
The strongest designs photograph the same person without cosmetics and with one or more controlled applications. Because identity remains constant, differences in ratings can more plausibly be connected to the presentation condition. Some studies ask participants to adjust the amount of makeup digitally; others compare self-applied and professionally applied cosmetics.
Even a within-person design is not perfect. Makeup can be applied together with hair styling, different lighting, retouching, or a changed expression. Good studies control those variables, while a social-media transformation often does not. That is why a striking online comparison cannot tell you how much of the effect came from makeup alone.
Facial Contrast Is One Plausible Mechanism
Richard Russell measured luminance contrast around the eyes and mouth relative to surrounding skin. In the photographs he examined, female faces had greater contrast in these regions than male faces, and cosmetics consistently increased that contrast. Manipulating contrast also influenced whether an androgynous face was perceived as male or female.
This work helps explain why darkening lashes or brows and adding lip color can change perceived femininity and definition. It does not establish one optimal contrast level. Color, feature shape, skin tone, age, viewing conditions, and local beauty conventions can all change the result.
Cosmetics placed only on facial features may also change how the untouched skin is perceived. Across two studies, feature-only makeup increased perceived skin evenness. Pixel-identical skin was guaranteed in the digitally manipulated first study; the second used professionally applied feature makeup with no product placed on the skin. During Study 1, two researchers received funding from CERIES, a Chanel subsidiary; the authors reported that CERIES had no role in the study, analysis, or publication. The visual system evaluates a face relationally, not as a list of isolated areas.
More Makeup Is Not Necessarily More Attractive
Jones, Kramer, and Ward asked women to apply makeup for a night out, then created a sequence of images ranging from no makeup to more than the original application. Male and female observers were broadly similar in the amount they found most attractive. The models, however, had applied more than the average amount preferred by observers.
This finding is sometimes simplified into a rule that everyone prefers minimal makeup. That is not what the study proves. The sample, products, social context, and photographic conditions were specific. The useful conclusion is that people may misestimate another audience's preference, so testing several realistic versions is more reliable than assuming maximum intensity wins.
Identity Usually Matters More Than Cosmetics
Jones and Kramer later compared cosmetic effect sizes across several studies. Professionally applied cosmetics often produced larger changes than self-application. Yet differences between the people photographed remained larger than the effect of makeup in the analyzed datasets.
That is a valuable corrective to transformation marketing. Cosmetics can influence an image, sometimes meaningfully, but they do not replace identity. In one self-application sample, identity explained far more variance in ratings than the makeup condition. Faces that began with higher ratings also tended to gain less, on average, from cosmetics.
Attractiveness, Competence, and Trust Are Different
Etcoff and colleagues presented the same faces with no makeup and with natural, professional, or glamorous applications. After a very brief exposure, cosmetics improved several judgments. With unlimited viewing, attractiveness and perceived competence remained elevated, while trustworthiness and likability varied more by style.
These are perceived traits, not verified personal qualities. A photograph rated as more competent does not prove the person is more capable. The work was funded by P&G Beauty & Grooming, and co-author Sarah A. Vickery was a Principal Scientist at P&G. The authors reported that the funder had no role in study design or data analysis; both facts remain relevant when interpreting the results.
Culture and Context Can Change the Pattern
A recent preregistered study compared Chinese and British participants rating East Asian and White faces with natural, light, and heavy cosmetics. Makeup generally increased perceived attractiveness and several other social judgments. Trust produced a more context-sensitive result: Chinese participants rated light makeup as more trustworthy than the natural or heavy conditions, while British participants showed no equivalent difference.
One study cannot define national preferences, and labels such as light or heavy are culturally constructed. Still, the result is a useful warning against exporting a finding from one market and presenting it as globally universal.

- Fix the camera. Place it at eye level and a natural portrait distance. Do not switch lenses between conditions.
- Fix the light. Use broad, neutral light and disable beauty filters, portrait relighting, and automatic retouching.
- Create three realistic conditions. Photograph no makeup, a light everyday application, and the stronger style you would genuinely wear.
- Keep everything else stable. Match hair, expression, angle, crop, clothing, and time of day.
- Take several frames. One blink or tense expression can overwhelm a subtle cosmetic effect.
- Compare for the intended outcome. Ask which photo looks most natural, polished, approachable, or appropriate rather than asking only which scores highest.
How to Interpret an AI Result
Cosmetics alter the pixels presented to a model: contrast, apparent edge definition, visible skin variation, and sometimes landmark visibility. A changed result is therefore a response to changed image information. It is not evidence that one condition reveals your objective attractiveness.
